my craziest headcanon yet
Oct. 29th, 2022 09:23 amI'm gonna have to get ultimania caps for this ughhh :/ until i get those, bear with me
Anyway I think there's canon precedent that Genomes have some kind of weird extra organ that holds all the pre-installed programs and information, as it were, and also might be how they do the Weird Psychic Shit.
Exhibit A is Garland, a Genome himself. Please observe the big horrible glowing organ inside the orifice of his chest....despite this being a video game, it is not a weak point you can target.
The reason I'm pointing that out will make sense in a little bit.
Exhibit B is the Gargoyle enemy found in Ipsen's castle, an enemy that has to be animated by an outside force before it's fought.
In the Ultimania, it's stated the gargoyles aren't just acting arbitrarily or directly under the control of whoever animated them; they actually contain an object in their body that's basically their OS.
In particular, gargoyles are animated by Agares, a demon type enemy. Many (but not all) demonic enemies in FFIX are associated in some way with Terra, the game's literal underworld; Ipsen's castle as an area is no exception.
Speaking of demons, let's look at Meltigemini, aka Exhibit C.
Sorry you had to look at Meltigemini. Anyway, what's that blue thing there in the middle of its chest?
(For the purposes of interesting roleplay: who knows what would happen if you messed with the Mystery Organ in some way? Could a Genome live without it...? These are the mysteries.)

(ftr, Meltigemini is another demon type enemy.)
Sure, it could just be some interesting visual clutter amid all the gore. But it could also be more than that. It's not outright said that Zorn and Thorn are children of Terra, but it's easy to make the jump -- they give their fealty to Kuja for no other easily explained reason, and are also 80 years old and still very spry little jesters. If you live an absurdly long time in this setting, you're usually either a Qu or some kind of spawn of Terra.
To be frank, Terran abominations born with their purpose already bone-deep inside them are practically a penny a dozen! They've got to have SOME kind of keystone technology behind this process, and when in doubt, if it's some kind of weird body horror, it's probably how something Terran works.
...Anyway, I think it's just cooler if this is how things work rather than them being complete 1:1 humans with non-vestigial tails. Peace ✌️
